Enjoy the Great Outdoors? So do the Crooks!

If you thought crooks were watching, would you be more mindful of your surroundings?

With spring here and longer days, perhaps it’s time for some outside athletic activities: such as bicycling, walking, hiking, or playing sports.

The Simi Valley Police Department would like to remind the community by taking preventive steps you can reduce your chance of becoming a crime victim.

Here are some simple steps to do to keep your valuables where they belong – with you:

 Before you park your vehicle in the parking lot, remember would-be thieves are watching to see if you remove or hide your valuables in your car as you exit.

 Harden the Target - always roll up all windows and lock your vehicle doors – unlocked doors are the number one way thieves get into vehicles in Simi Valley.

 Before going on an adventure, carry your ID, cash, or credit cards on your person. Leave your purse, wallet and other items at home, so they don’t fall into the hands of crooks looking for an opportunity to steal from you.

 Plan your route ahead of time and use well-lit streets in case of darkness.

 Be alert to your surroundings; look around you while you are working out.

 If you are playing sports, lock your bag with your ID inside to a fixed object. Find a pole/fence; wrap a cable around it and your bag. Secure it with a lock.

 While bicycling; share the road, never ride against traffic, avoid riding on the sidewalk, never wear headphones/earbuds in both ears (it’s illegal and dangerous), and always lock the frame and both wheels to a fixed object using a U-shaped lock and a cable.

 Take a minute and look around. Is there anyone acting suspicious? Call SVPD (805) 583-6950 and report any suspicious activity – If you see it report it!
