A vehicle collided with a tractor/trailer causing major injuries to two local teenagers

DATE/TIME: March 5, 2019 5:04 p.m.

INCIDENT: Major Injury Traffic Collision

LOCATION: Bear Valley Rd. east of Pawnee Road, Town of Apple Valley

VICTIM(S): Cameron Gomez, 17 years old, resident of Apple Valley (Driver of Toyota)
Kadyn Gomez, 13 years old, resident of Apple Valley (passenger in Toyota)
Ronald Brown, 65 years old, resident of Apple Valley (Driver of tractor/trailer)


SUMMARY:
On March 3, 2019 at 5:04 p.m., Cameron Gomez was traveling east bound on Bear Valley Road operating his 2005 Toyota Corolla. Gomez crossed into oncoming traffic colliding into an Apex powder truck that was traveling west bound on Bear Valley Road. The collision caused major damage to the Toyota Corolla as well as the tractor trailer which was partially turned over. As a result of the collision, Cameron Gomez and his passenger(brother), Kadyn Gomez, suffered major life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Apex tractor trailer, Ronald Brown, was uninjured.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Apple Valley Station, AMR and Apple Valley Fire Protection District, responded to the location. Extrication was required to remove Cameron from the vehicle which lasted approximately 30 minutes. Cameron and Kadyn were flown to nearby trauma centers via helicopter, CHP H80 and San Bernardino County Fire H325. Cameron and Kadyn Gomez are both currently in stable but critical condition.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station. During the initial investigation, deputies learned that Cameron Gomez was possibly affected by fatigue and fell asleep while driving. Speed, alcohol and drugs were determined not to be a factor in the collision.
