Spring Forward, March 10, 2019

The Simi Valley Police Department would like to remind the community that Daylight Savings Time’s spring forward approaches this Sunday, March 10, 2019. While most cellphones and other devices make the time change automatically, traditional clocks need to be adjusted manually and be set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. The beginning of Daylight Savings Time marks the beginning of longer days. The added daylight, benefits retail businesses, sports, and other activities that utilize sunlight after working hours.

To prepare for this seasonal change, the Simi Valley Police Department would like to suggest a few safety tips.

While you are changing the clocks on your oven, microwave and etc., this is the perfect time to promote other new routines.

• Replace the batteries on your smoke detectors, flashlights and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Install timers which mirror your normal habits for indoor lighting; never come home to a dark house.
• Purchase dusk to dawn motion sensing lights over doorways, garages and side and rear yards. The sensor will detect movement and shine a light onto the would-be-thieves, scaring them off.
• Repair broken or burned out light bulbs.
• Check to see if your fire extinguishers need recharging.
• The end of DST can leave you feeling fatigued, which can pose safety risks both at home and in the workplace. Try to readjust your sleep schedule.
• Remember your pets. They don't know about the time change, so be kind to them: they may get hungry an hour earlier.
• Evidence suggests that time changes increase accidents in the home and on the roadway. Just being aware of the increased risk may help you stay alert.
