Criminal learns the hard way:  Not in OUR City

At 12:19 PM Wednesday February 27, 2019 Cobb 911 dispatch notified our officers that a man had just knocked a woman to the ground and snatched her purse at gunpoint in the parking lot of 2150 Delk Road.  While officers were enroute to the victim, 911 dispatchers provided multiple updates including descriptions from witnesses and the direction the suspect left.

Once on scene, Officers immediately notified surrounding jurisdictions and began collecting valuable information.  Thanks to the swift organized work by all involved, Marietta City and Cobb County Police Officers confronted the suspect roughly two miles away at 835 South Cobb Drive.  Less than (25) minutes after the crime occurred, the suspect, now identified as forty-seven-year-old Melvin Ward of Smyrna Georgia was taken into custody.  Ward was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on the following charges:

  • Armed Robbery Weapon (F)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime (F)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (F)
  • Battery Visible Harm (M)

Chief Flynn would like to thank the citizens that called into 911 with tips, the 911 dispatchers, the Marietta Police Officers and Cobb County Police Officers who all worked so well together to swiftly solve this crime and provide justice for the victim.  When we work together as a team, we send the message to would be criminals: “Crime will not be tolerated in our City.”
