A 13-year-old student at Cobalt Institute of Math & Science is arrested after a handgun is found in his backpack

INCIDENT: Possession of a Firearm at a Public School
LOCATION: Cobalt Institute of Math & Science, 14045 Topaz Road, Victorville
SUSPECT: 13-year old male student
SUMMARY:
On February 26, 2019, school resource deputies, with Victorville Police Department, were notified by staff at Cobalt Institute of Math & Science that an eighth-grade student brought a gun to school.
Deputies responded and learned an anonymous tip was received by school staff, indicating the student had an air pistol. Security officers at the school located the student and found he had a real handgun in his backpack. The gun was not loaded, and no ammunition was found in the students’ possession.
Deputies interviewed the student and a search warrant was served at the student’s home. No other weapons or evidence of credible threats were located. He was arrested and booked at High Desert Juvenile Detention Center for possession of a firearm at a public school.
