With the New Year, it’s time for new habits. Let’s take steps to protect you from identity theft. Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information to commit fraud. By using your identity, thieves can apply for credit, file taxes, and receive medical services all under your name.
Take steps to protect yourself from Identity Theft:
• Secure your Social Security number (SSN). Do not carry your Social Security card in your wallet. Only give out your SSN when absolutely necessary.
• Banks and credit card companies WILL NOT ask for you to share your birthdate, Social Security number, or Bank Account number. Never give this information out over the telephone and/or in an email. Call the company that is inquiring about you just to be safe!
• Collect your mail every day from your mailbox. Place a hold on your mail when you are away from home for several days. https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/
• Would you like to know what mail will be delivered daily? Sign up for - Informed Delivery by USPS - https://www.usps.com/informeddelivery and preview incoming mail images through your email.
• Review your credit card and bank account statements regularly. Compare receipts with account statements. Watch for unauthorized transactions.
• Did you know you are entitled to one free credit report each year from the three nationwide credit reporting companies, (Equifax, Experian and Transunion)? Order online at Annualcreditreport.com or 1 877-322-8228.
• Shred receipts, credit offers, account statements, and expired credit cards, to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting your personal information.
• By reviewing your credit reports once a year. Be certain that they don't include accounts that you have not opened.
