Austin Sala charged in connection with gold nugget theft. Additional suspects still being sought.

At 4:45 PM on February 15, 2019, Anchorage Police responded to Wells Fargo Corporate Headquarters at 301 W Northern Lights Boulevard in reference to a theft; a large gold nugget had been stolen from a display case.  The suspect was described as a white male, 35 – 40 years old, approximately 5’08” tall with long brown hair.  He was wearing a white coat. The responding officer contacted several pawn shops to advise them of the theft.
At 4:32 PM on February 18, 2019, an employee at Gold Buyers of Alaska in Eagle River called APD Dispatch to report that three individuals had walked in and were attempting to sell pieces of a gold nugget (the original stolen nugget had been cut up).  Officers arrived and contacted 19-year-old Austin M. Sala who was transported to APD for questing by detectives.  He was subsequently remanded at the Anchorage Jail on an outstanding felony warrant for the original charges of Misconduct Involving a Weapon I, Misconduct Involving a Weapon II, and two counts of Assault III.  He was additionally charged with Theft I and Theft II.
An adult female was also contacted and transported for questioning by detectives.  She was not charged.
