Green Bay Crime Drops 13.81% Overall During 2018

The Green Bay Police Department has finalized out statistical analysis for the Part 1 Crimes that we report each year to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their Uniform Crime Report (UCR). Part 1 Crimes are the serious crimes and are broken down into two subcategories, Violent Crimes, and Property Crimes.

Violent Crimes include Homicide, Rape, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault. Property Crimes include Burglary, Larceny/Theft, Stolen Motor Vehicles, and Arson.

Attached to this press release you will find a chart showing our UCR crime numbers for the years 2003 through 2018. In addition the chart shows the percentage change between 2018 and 2017. The results shown in the Part 1 Crimes indicate that crime in Green Bay is trending downward overall, with a 13.81% reduction in crime overall from 2017. Interestingly, 2017 was also lower than the preceding year 2016. Chief Andrew Smith stated, “These are very good crime numbers and crime rates we haven’t seen since the seventies and eighties.”

Chief Smith added, “We are very proud that crime is trending downward in Green Bay, but one violent crime is too many especially when you are talking about crimes like homicide and rape. We will continue our best efforts to prevent crime and where it cannot be prevented, we will hold those responsible to account. Green Bay is not the place to try and commit a crime.”

While most of the Part 1 Crimes are seeing reductions, there are two areas of concern, the rape and stolen auto categories. There were 64 reported rapes in 2018, up from the 51 reported in 2017. Captain Jeremy Muraski stated, “We analyze our crime numbers and incidents every week during crime control meetings in an effort to detect pattern crimes and crime trends. When it comes to serious crimes like sexual assault, we work very hard to detect and address any repeat offenders.” Chief Smith added, “We are not seeing cases of repeat serial rapists attacking random strangers.”

The Green Bay Police Department has implemented Crime Analysis, Intelligence-Led Policing, Spatial GIS Analysis, and utilizes those principles in concert with a community policing focus. “The hard work of the men and women of the Green Bay Police Department and our mutual trust with the community are absolutely vital to our success”, Chief Smith stated. “Not only have our officers embraced Community Policing, but they partner with people from throughout the City to fight crime and solve problems. Also, they are doing more with less every day… we are down 14 officers and still hammering away at crime every watch, every day. The detectives have built a reputation of relentlessness in following up on serious crimes… and its working.”
