Subjects charged in February 6, 2019 armed robbery of man at Shelter Cove Plaza, Hilton Head Island ATM

While making a deposit at an automated teller machine (ATM) in Shelter Cove Plaza just after midnight on February 6, 2019, a man was robbed at gunpoint by two male subjects. The subjects demanded money and struck the man with the handgun, causing him to fall on the ground. The subjects took $170 from the man and fled the area in an awaiting vehicle. Responding Sheriff’s Office deputies were unable to locate the vehicle or subjects. Information regarding the robbery, including images of the subjects captured by security cameras, was provided to the public through NIXLE and local media outlets.

In coordination with other area law enforcement agencies, Sheriff’s Office investigators followed up leads and identified the three subjects responsible for the robbery: the two who approached the man at the ATM and the driver of the getaway vehicle. On February 14, the driver of the getaway vehicle, 18-year-old Isaiah McElveen of St. Helena Island, turned himself in to deputies and was charged with Robbery while Armed with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Conspiracy. McElveen was transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center and incarcerated. McElveen’s bonds totaled $30,000 for the two offenses, which he posted and was released from the Detention Center on February 15.

This morning, 18-year-old Luis Pantoja Jr. of Ladys Island—one of the two subjects who approached the man at the Shelter Cove ATM—turned himself in to Sheriff’s Office deputies on arrest warrants for Robbery while Armed with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Conspiracy. Pantoja Jr. was arrested, transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center and incarcerated. Pantoja Jr.’s bonds totaled $30,000 for the two charges. As of this afternoon, Pantoja Jr. had not posted bond and remained incarcerated.

The third subject, 19-year-old Carson Wohlwend of Beaufort, is currently incarcerated in the Charleston County Detention Center for a recent robbery committed in that jurisdiction. Wohlwend was identified as the subject who was armed with the handgun and pistol whipped the man at the Shelter Cove ATM. Investigators obtained warrants for Wohlwend’s arrest for Robbery while Armed with a Deadly Weapon, Assault and Battery 1st Degree and Criminal Conspiracy. There is an in-state hold on Wohlwend. Should he post bond for the Charleston County charges, Wohlwend will be picked up by Sheriff’s Office deputies and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or other activities these subjects may be involved in is asked to call Sergeant Pat Murphy at 843-255-3413.

We appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
