Is Your Workplace Prepared to Respond to a Cardiac or First Aid Emergency?

You’ll never know when a cardiac or first aid emergency will occur. With most of us spending a large majority of our time at work, are you prepared to handle a health emergency in your workplace?

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 10,000 cardiac arrests take place annually in the workplace. Immediate CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use can double survival rates.

An AED is a lightweight, portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to deliver an electric shock through the chest to the heart. This shock can stop an irregular rhythm and reestablish an effective rhythm. AED’s are often found in businesses, schools, recreation and community centers and fitness and health organizations.

Is your workforce prepared to respond?
• If your employer offers CPR and First Aid, take advantage of participating in the class
• If CPR and First Aid is not offered through your employer, consider taking a class from the American Red Cross
• Know where an AED is located and have a plan to test the batteries monthly
• Know where a first aid kit is stored and have a plan to check/restock the kits
• Know how to dial out from a business land line
• Emergencies should be reported by calling 9-1-1
• Know your employer address, building number and be able to describe your exact location
• Consider keeping basic supplies (e.g. gloves, facemask, etc.) in your desk

At your next staff meeting, take five minutes to go over these items. Together, we can help raise the standard of care for everyone, while making Santa Clara one of the best and most proactive heart-healthy cities to work in.
