Avalanche Warning until 06:15AM Saturday

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE COLORADO AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER. Avalanche Warning for the San Juan Mountains, Gunnison, and Sawatch zones.

* Timing: in effect from 6 AM MST Friday, February 15th through 6 AM Saturday, February 16th

* Affected Areas: Mosquito Range, Sawatch Range, Elk Mountains, Ruby Range, West Elk Mountains, San Juan Mountains, La Garita Mountains, La Plata Mountains, and Needle Mountains

* Avalanche Danger: The backcountry avalanche danger is HIGH (Level 4 fo 5)

* Reason: Up to two feet of heavy snow fell overnight. Strong westerly winds continue to drift snow and load avalanche start zones. Natural avalanches can run from mountain tops to valley floors. Large human-triggered avalanches are very likely.

* AFFECTED AREAS: WEST ELK AND SAWATCH MOUNTAINS ... EASTERN SAWATCH MOUNTAINS ABOVE 11000 FT ... UNCOMPAHGRE PLATEAU/DALLAS DIVIDE ... NORTHWESTERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS ... WESTERN MOSQUITO RANGE/EAST LAKE COUNTY ABOVE 11000 FT ... EASTERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS ABOVE 10000 FT ... LA GARITA MOUNTAINS ABOVE 10000 FT ... SOUTHWEST SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS ... WESTERN CHAFFEE COUNTY BETWEEN 9000 AND 11000 FT
