Online Safety Tips Day 3: Online Dating brought to you by Lancaster Station & LASD Fraud & Cyber Crimes Bureau

Happy Rainy Valentine's Day!

We continue our online safety tip week with a few more tips from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Fraud and Cyber Crimes Bureau. While love is in the air today, here are guidelines to online dating.

1. Meet in a public place the first few times.
2. Request several photos before you meet. If the person is only able to send you one photo of themselves, that may be a red flag.
3. Do not send money to someone you have only met online, even if you think they can be trusted.
4. Tell a friend or family member when you are going to meet a date! Make sure you let someone know where you will be, what time and stick to those plans. Making sure someone knows where you are at all times is important. Feel free to mention to your potential date ahead of time that you have mentioned them/their name and your upcoming date to friends. This may deter any predators from going through with the actual date.
"I told my best friend Kathy about our date on Friday! I even had to share your picture with her because I am so excited!"
5. Keep all of your personal information to yourself!

Don't forget about your elderly family members. Thieves and scammers are purposely on the look out for elder widowers or lonely daters looking for a relationship. They will prey on those feelings and exploit them, by professing instant feelings of love, being "exactly" what that person is looking for and moving quickly with the online relationship, while always having excuses as to why they can't meet in person. The scammer will quickly come up with an emergency and begin to ask for financial help.

We hope all of our residents find true and everlasting love! Just make sure you use a little bit of caution while you are looking.
