Advisory

Ruse Burglary, IRS Scams, and Citizen's Police Academy

The Frankfort Police Department was made aware of a recent ruse burglary in the Lincoln-Way area.  In this situation, the offender presented themselves as a utility worker.  The worker, who had a reflective vest on, said they worked for the water department and convinced the homeowner he needed to check some interior plumbing.  While the offender was in the basement distracting the homeowner, it is believed another unknown person entered the home and stole jewelry.  Remember to always ask for identification before allowing people into your home, especially if they come unannounced.  All Frankfort Utility and Public Works employees have village identification, will be in clothing with Village of Frankfort displayed on it,  and will be driving a village vehicle with village markings on it.  We encourage homeowners to confirm the legitimacy of any type of utility worker by calling a the company, village or the department they represent.

During tax season, we often receive reports involving IRS scams.  Reminder the IRS does not:

  • Demand that you use a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, Apple pay, Google pay or wire transfer. The IRS will not ask for your debit or credit card numbers over the phone. If you owe taxes, make payments to the United States Treasury or review IRS.gov/payments for IRS online options.

  • Demand that you pay taxes without the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes. You should also be advised of your rights as a taxpayer.

  • Threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers or other law enforcement to have you arrested for not paying. The IRS also cannot revoke your driver’s license, business licenses, or immigration status. Threats like these are common tactics scam artists use to trick victims into buying into their schemes.

Not sure if something is a scam?  Call the Frankfort Police Department.  We are happy to assist you.
