Winter Storm Watch until 05:00PM Friday
A series of storms during the mid to late week period will bring the threat of heavy snow to the eastern Utah and western Colorado mountains. The initial storm arrives late tomorrow, followed by a brief downturn in precipitation over the mid and lower elevations, followed by a stronger storm accompanied by sub-tropical moisture. There is still considerable uncertainty in exact snow amounts, snow levels and precipitation types with this second storm. Higher elevation snow could exceed 1 to 2 feet under this prolonged period of very moist air lifting over the area mountains.
* WHAT...An extended period of moderate to heavy snow possible from the mid to late week period over the western Colorado and eastern Utah mountains. Snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches are possible, with amounts over 2 feet possible over favored aspects. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph at times near and above treeline.
* WHERE...The mountains of eastern Utah and western Colorado.
* WHEN...From Wednesday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult at times. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility and lead to drifting over high mountain roadways. Gusty winds and heavy wet nature of the snowfall could bring down tree branches and power lines under the right conditions.
* AFFECTED AREAS: EASTERN UINTA MOUNTAINS ... GORE AND ELK MOUNTAINS/CENTRAL MOUNTAIN VALLEYS ... LA SAL AND ABAJO MOUNTAINS ... WEST ELK AND SAWATCH MOUNTAINS ... ELKHEAD AND PARK MOUNTAINS ... UNCOMPAHGRE PLATEAU/DALLAS DIVIDE ... NORTHWESTERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS ... FLATTOPS ... GRAND AND BATTLEMENT MESAS ... SOUTHWEST SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS
