Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a person in Shirley early this morning.
 
A 2004 Jeep was travelling southbound on William Floyd Parkway, near Dawn Drive, when it was struck from behind by a 2010 Toyota sedan driven by James Dontae at approximately 12:50 a.m. The Jeep caught fire following the crash.
 
The driver of the Jeep, who has yet to be identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Dontae, 29, of Shirley, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
 
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
