Wintry Weather Expected Sunday and Monday Nights

Wintry weather is expected to affect portions of the area Sunday night into Monday morning and again Monday night into Tuesday. There is increasing confidence that impacts to travel will occur; however, there is still uncertainty in the exact placement and evolution of the various precipitation types. Here are some of the key messages for these two events:

A weaker wave of low pressure will move across the region Sunday night. At this time, there is the potential for accumulating snowfall across the region; however, the greatest chances exist along and south of the I-78 corridor. There is also the chance for a period of sleet and freezing rain for portions of Delmarva with this event, but its occurrence and duration remain rather uncertain at this time. Areas that remain all snow can expect up to 2 inches.

A much stronger storm system will begin to move toward the area by Monday evening. Precipitation will begin to overspread the region from west to east late Monday afternoon and into the evening. There is the potential for accumulating snow at the onset of this storm, especially northwest of the I-95 corridor. Snow will eventually transition to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain before changing over to all rain on Tuesday. There is also the potential for a sustained period of freezing rain across areas north and west of the Philly Metro. At this time, the greatest chances for impacts from wintry precipitation, including during the Tuesday morning commute, are expected to be north of the Mason-Dixon Line; however, overall confidence is quite low.
