Advisory

Where to get up-to-date public safety information and how to provide information on criminal/suspicious activity

Where to get up-to-date public safety information

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind our residents and guests where to go for accurate and up-to-date information on matters concerning public safety. In the event of an emergency or natural disaster, we primarily communicate with our residents and guests through email and text message using the NIXLE alert and advisory system. For those who prefer to receive public safety notifications through social media and by other means—and in an effort to expand our public information reach—we post our NIXLE messages on the Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, on Nextdoor, on Twitter and on our website.

Avoid Misinformation Spread through Social Media

In the event of a public safety emergency or natural disaster, please look to federal, state, county and municipal government officials, as well as trusted print, radio and television media for information and instruction. We urge you to avoid information spread through social media, unless it comes from one of the trusted sources.

How to Provide Information on Criminal Activity

The previously mentioned NIXLE alert and advisory system and social media sites are our means of providing information, but are not the ideal means for our residents and guests to report timely information on criminal/suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office. "If you see something, say something:" We urge our residents and guests to call Sheriff's Office Emergency Dispatch 9-1-1 immediately when observing criminal activity or suspicious behaviors/packages. To report matters less immediate to the Sheriff's Office, please call our non-emergency dispatch number 843-524-2777.

How to Provide Information on a Criminal Investigation

Information/tips on criminal investigations should either be provided to the investigator assigned to the case or through Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry. The Sheriff's Office's NIXLE advisories and social media posts will include the name and telephone number of the deputy/investigator assigned to the case. Anyone who has information and wishes to remain anonymous can do so through Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111. Information provided to Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry that may further an investigation—lead to an arrest or locate a wanted person—could be considered for monetary reward.

Note for Bluffton residents: In addition to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office NIXLE alerts and advisories, residents using Bluffton ZIP codes to sign up for NIXLE may receive Jasper County and Hardeeville alerts and advisories. Those with Bluffton ZIP codes who wish to only receive alerts and advisories from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office can use ZIP codes 29902, 29926 or 29928 when signing up for NIXLE.

Thank you for your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
