3 small suspicious fires in Emeryville on Tuesday evening

Late Tuesday evening (02/05/19) at about 10:31 pm, EPD officers responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of 43rd St. When the officers arrived, they discovered a storage shed in the rear of the property was on fire. The responding officers quickly notified the residents of the adjacent properties of the fire and assisted in temporarily evacuating them as a precautionary measure. Shortly thereafter, two additional fires, one in the 1000 block of 45th St. (a dumpster fire) and one in the 4300 block of Salem St. (a carport area) were reported. The Alameda County Fire Department responded and was able to quickly extinguish the fires while they were small without any reported challenges.

The fires were determined to be suspicious because of the close proximity and short timeframe between each fire. The reported damage sustained by each of the fires was minor to moderate and no one was injured or displaced because of the fires.

There was no specific suspect description provided by the witnesses, however some reported seeing a person riding away from the area on a bicycle. The Emeryville Police Department detectives have been diligently following up on leads, processing evidence, and working with the Alameda County Fire investigators to determine the cause of the three fires as well as to identify the individual(s) involved in this incident.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Emeryville Police Department at (510) 596-3700.

The Emeryville Police Department and its staff are committed to increasing the safety of the City and preventing incidents like these. As always, “If you see something, say something.”
