Your Garage Door Stands Between Your Home and a Burglary

Besides being a storage location for power tools, golf clubs and your car, garages are also a common entry point for burglars.

Consider these simple steps you can take to prevent this type of residential break-in:...
• Store your vehicle(s) in your locked garage
• Do not leave the garage door remote in your vehicle. It is like leaving the key to your house in your car
• Invest in a keychain garage door remote, as opposed to the visor clip version
• Lock the door between your garage and your house
• Tint, frost or cover your garage windows so thieves cannot see when your vehicle is gone, or what is being stored in your garage
• Secure your garage door emergency release and/or padlock the throw latch when you are out of town
• Do not leave your garage door open - even if you are home
• Install motion-sensor lights to deter nighttime break-ins
• If you have a house alarm, activate it both when you are home or away

If you come home and find a door or window open or signs of forced entry, do not enter. Instead, call 9-1-1 immediately. Non-emergency situations should be reported by calling (408)615-5580.
