Attack on handicapped grandmother leads to shooting of suspect

Lt. Chris Taylor of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Corey Lee Beck, 26, address listed as Briar Patch Drive in Nebo, with assault on an individual with disabilities.
Deputies were called to Briar Patch Drive Friday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. in reference to an assault.
They arrived to find 69-year-old Shirley Beck, address listed as Briar Patch Drive, outside on the ground with wounds to her hands, arms and neck.
Corey and Shirley live at the same residence, along with Shirley’s son, who reportedly showed up at the home later.
It is alleged that Corey became agitated with Shirley, who is his grandmother, dragged her and her wheelchair outside and assaulted her.
During the commotion, Shirley’s son-in-law, Scott Gentry, who lives nearby, came over with a gun and shot Corey in the right leg.
No charges have been filed against Gentry at this time.
Corey was taken to Grace Hospital in Morganton, and Shirley was transported to Mission Hospital McDowell.
                The investigation continues.
