Armed Subject Arrested

Armed Subject Arrested
Today, 02-01-2019 at 1:55 pm Officers from The Janesville Police Department were dispatched to 613 E Milwaukee Street for the report of an armed subject. The initial caller reported that the gun was not loaded. Officers responded to the residence to find an elderly male standing on the front porch armed with a shot gun. The armed man was identified as Byron D. Long of Janesville.

Officers were arriving in the area and positioning themselves safely around the residence. As this was occurring, Long leveled the shot gun pointing it at one of the responding officers. Officers continued to maintain their positions and work at resolving the issue. Members of The Janesville Police Department Hostage Negotiation Team began working on communication with the family and the suspect. They learned through this process that there was in fact ammunition in the home for that weapon. Officers from HNT continued their efforts and at 2:39 pm Long surrendered without further incident.

The continuing investigation showed that Long was intoxicated and distraught about some personal issues. He argued with members of his family pointing the firearm at them. The family left the residence and called 911. A search of the residence lead to the recovery of a 12 gauge shotgun. Currently Long is awaiting transport to the Rock County Jail. He will be detained on three separate charges for his actions today. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
