Advisory

Please read the following alert regarding the impending cold weather **See attached**

We are rarely exposed to the impending weather conditions (temperatures + wind speeds) expected to visit us over the next few days.  Whether at work or at home, the considerations go beyond our colleagues and fellow workers to include loved ones, neighbors, friends and pets.

Hypothermia can occur at relatively high temperatures (e.g., 60°F when feet are continuously wet).  The temperature drop now approaching the Northeast requires thoughtful planning to mitigate the potential for injuries and potential fatalities.  Hypothermia is typically noted when the human body core temperature drops to 95°F or below.  There are other cold-weather related illnesses and injuries such as frostbite, trench foot, and chilblains that should also be considered when planning work or recreational activities.

Please consider taking the following precautions:

  • Dress in layers
    • Avoid cotton materials – it does not wick away moisture from the body
    • Have extra clothing to change into in the event what you’re wearing gets wet
    • Tip:  wearing rain gear can significantly cut down on the effects of wind exposure
  • Cover as much otherwise-exposed skin as possible – ears, nose, fingers are most susceptible to injury
  • Take breaks BEFORE you NEED them and in a warm environment
    • Don’t be too shy or ‘tough’ – speak up when a break is warranted
    • Stay hydrated but refrain from caffeinated and alcohol-based beverages
  • Do not rub exposed flesh or flesh that may be developing incipient frostbite (aka frost nip) – you can/may irreversibly damage the tissue
  • You are encourage to seek out additional information readily available regarding these conditions beyond what little I’ve provided here.
  • Please check on elderly neighbors if possible.
Thank you and keep warm,

Mayor Lance Colondo
Mark Morella, President - Vigilance Hose Co #1 Nazareth Fire Dept
Chief Randy Miller - Nazareth Police Department
