Police Winter Road Safety Efforts

Police Department Winter Road Safety Efforts

The City of Janesville has experienced significant snowfall and bitterly cold temperatures in the last 13 days.

The Janesville Police Department is committed to ensuring illegally parked vehicles are removed from city streets. Illegally parked vehicles during winter events hinder DPW plowing efforts and decrease overall road safety.

Since 01/18/19, the Janesville Police Department has issued in excess of 600 parking citations for Snow Emergency violations. In addition, 145 abandoned vehicle investigations have been started to remove vehicles from the roadway. Many of these abandoned vehicle investigations are active and will progress to the vehicles being towed. An abandoned vehicle process may begin after a vehicle has been parked on the street for over 24 hours without moving.

Janesville City Ordinance 10.40.080 states:

No person shall park, stop or leave standing any vehicle on any street or public parking lot after a snowfall of at least two inches in depth until after the snow from such street has been removed or plowed to the curbline or the snow from such parking lot has been removed. The common council declares that an emergency exists during and following such snowstorm until the snow has been removed or so plowed.

The best place to park during a snow emergency is in your garage or driveway. If you are unable to park in a driveway or garage, please park in one of the designated snow emergency parking stalls. These stalls are located in the seven downtown municipal parking lots listed below:

- East Wall Street Lot at E. Wall Street & N. Parker Drive

- City Hall Lot at W. Wall Street & N. Jackson Street

- S High Street Lot at W. Court Street & S. High Street

- Senior Center Lot at St. Lawrence Avenue & Water Street

- Hedberg Public Library Lot on Water Street

- River/Union Street Lot at S. River Street & Union Street

- N Parker Drive Parking Ramp at N. Parker Drive and E. Wall Street

When you arrive at the lot, look for the signs designating the snow emergency parking stalls. Fines for parking on the streets during a snow emergency are $50. The Police Department may begin issuing tickets to violators before plowing operations begin.
