Weather Advisory – Tuesday Evening / Wednesday Morning

Weather Advisory – Tuesday Evening / Wednesday Morning

The weather forecast calls for dramatically colder temperatures Wednesday morning. Drivers should allow extra time for vehicles to defrost and be careful for any black ice. Here is the latest weather update and school advisory.

Weather Report
Afternoon Update: Rain changing to snow tonight with dropping temperatures... There have been a few flurries around this morning, however temps continue to warm with a developing SE wind and are now passing through the freezing mark. Any of these lingering flurries give way to intermittent rain showers and sprinkles that continue through the afternoon.

The 0.5 to 1.5" of snow accumulation should come this evening as the rain changes over to snow beginning 6 - 8 PM. The changeover should occur from west to east between this time frame. The snow should come down at fairly steady rates shortly after the changeover with a majority of the accumulating snow occurring in the first hour or two after changing over.

Temperatures will fall fairly quickly as the snow takes over, which will allow for icy spots on any untreated, wet pavements heading into tonight. Drier air works in fairly quickly, ending snow between 11 PM and 1 AM.

Tomorrow we are closely watching a windy, Arctic front that will kick off potent, but quick moving snow showers / squalls, capable of producing an additional coating to 1.0".

Notice from South Brunswick School Superintendent
Once again I write to you because if you have been following the weather, it appears we may be in for a minor weather event this evening into tomorrow morning. This notice is to share how this event will be monitored and managed as it relates to a potential 90-minute delayed opening for Wednesday, January 30th.

As this event has predictions of precipitation starting off as a mix of rain and snow this afternoon before changing to all snow, we will be watching the weather this evening into tomorrow morning. More specifically, if by 9:00 PM this evening, there is enough information to suggest the necessity of a delay, I will reach out by email and auto dialer to inform you of a delay. If however, the information remains unclear, I will wait until 5:00 AM on Wednesday morning to assess if a delay is warranted and if so, would make the call. Of course, if there is no need for a delay, then no such communication will be made and no delay will be called.

I share this with you so that you can be prepared in the event that we do have a delay then you have time to make a back-up plan as I know delays cause inconvenience to our families. So to be clear the following may occur all of which are dependent on the weather reports, conditions and the safety of our students and staff:
1. You will receive notice by email and phone by 9:00 PM this evening to call for a delay.
2. You will receive notice by email and phone by 5:00 AM tomorrow morning to call for a delay.
3. There will be no delay and therefore no need for notice, as no news means school will be operating under regular start times.

We feel it is always best to try and be prepared for these weather events.

Sincerely,
Scott Feder
Superintendent of Schools
