Advisory

DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS COMING

Dear Residents:
Here are a few tips to help you thru the EXTREME temperatures over the next couple days:
• Make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke detectors are working. If your detectors utilize replaceable batteries, install fresh batteries if the current one(s) are more than six (6) months old.
• Some heating systems may not be able to keep up with below -0 temperatures. Consider increasing your temperature thermostat to 70 degrees or higher for a couple days.
• Keep cabinet doors open to expose any plumbing/pipes – this will allow heat to access them and limit any possible freezing.
• Keep garage doors closed.
• Make sure furnace and water heater exhaust pipes (on the exterior of your home) are clear of snow and ice, so the deadly exhaust fumes cannot backup into your home.
• DO NOT USE YOUR OVEN (or propane heaters) to heat your home! They produce carbon monoxide and the fumes/gases could be deadly!
• DO NOT USE A GENERATOR IN YOUR HOME (OR IN A GARAGE)! They produce carbon monoxide and the fumes/gases could be deadly!
• Check on neighbors and elderly residents.
• Please keep animals inside for the next couple days.
• Heating specialists say not panic if the temperature falls inside your home and you can feel heat coming out of the registers – the furnace is doing the best it was designed for!
• Use caution if using a woodstove or fireplace, especially if the chimney hasn’t been recently inspected
