Attempted Vehicle Theft

On January 25, 2019 at 4:16 AM a patrol officer found a vehicle parked on Fox Hill Road near Hollow Brook Road. The vehicle had its lights off and doors open. As the officer pulled behind the vehicle to check on it, two subjects wearing ski masks and gloves jumped in the vehicle from a nearby driveway. The officer activated his lights and siren, but the vehicle failed to stop for the officer and fled from the scene. A brief chase ensued but the officer lost sight of the vehicle. A check of the vehicles license plate showed it was reported stolen on 1/22/19.

Patrol units returned to the residence where the subjects were observed running from. Surveillance video from the residence shows the two masked subjects enter the property and gain access to three unlocked vehicles. Thankfully nothing was taken from any of the vehicles because the officer interrupted the attempted theft.

While processing the first scene we received a call from a resident on Rockaway Road, reporting subjects walking around their home with flashlights. The residence was checked but the subjects fled prior to patrols arrival.

We have received reports from neighboring towns of similar incidents occurring during the same time frame. Several vehicles were burglarized and one vehicle was stolen from the owners driveway.

The common denominator in each of these incidents is that the vehicles were left unlocked. We ask all residents to remove their keys from their cars, and lock the doors of their cars and home every night.
