Advisory

Winter Storm Information for this weekend for Vermilion County

The following information is from the NWS in Lincoln concerning this weekend’s Winter Storm, particularly as it will affect Vermilion County.

Current timing indicates that we should start seeing snow showers beginning after midnight tonight.  Additionally, the southern half of the county could also see some light icing before the snow starts.  The ice is not expected to accumulate to much but will make the roadways very slick.  Snowfall overnight to sunrise should amount to no more than 1 – 2 inches.

Although the NWS is uncertain as to the exact amount of snow we will receive, it will be between 2 – 6 inches or possibly more in isolated areas, they are certain the wind will become a major issue Saturday with the wind increasing from the north and northeast to 20 – 25 mph with gusts possibly as high as 40 mph.  The blowing and drifting snow will cause whiteout conditions and make travel extremely hazardous during the day Saturday.

Although the main storm will end Saturday evening, more lake effect snow from a clipper system will bring us additional snow late Saturday night into Sunday.  Then Tuesday and Tuesday night, yet another system is forecast to being us 1 -2 inches of additional snow.

On top of the snow and wind, we will also see temperatures plummet to near zero Sunday and Monday, with wind chills forecast as low as -7 Monday morning.
