Suspect Arrested After Nearly Striking Officers with Stolen Vehicle

On Tuesday, December 18th, 2018, around 0400 hours, San Leandro Police officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Davis Street to investigate an occupied, suspicious vehicle.  When officers arrived, they saw a male, later identified as 29 yr-old Lancelot Ledwick, sitting in the driver seat of a pickup truck with drugs resting upon the center console.  Ledwick was in the company of his girlfriend and another male acquaintance.

Without provocation and despite numerous officer's commands, Ledwick started the vehicle’s ignition and hurriedly reversed the truck nearly striking two officers.  Officers were able to remove the male passenger was from the vehicle before Ledwick began to flee the scene.  Ledwick hit a fully marked police patrol vehicle before leading officers on a high-speed chase into the City of Oakland, reaching speeds above 100 miles per hour.  The pursuit, which covered a distance of about 11 miles was canceled in the interest of public safety.

On Thursday, December 20th, 2018, about 3:00 pm, The vehicle Ledwick fled in was located by Truckee Police officers parked in the driveway of a cabin nearly 200 miles away from San Leandro. A team of San Leandro Police detectives drove to Truckee to assume the investigation. After nearly a 24 hour surveillance,  Ledwick was located and arrested by SLPD detectives after a brief foot pursuit in the snow.  The pickup truck was found to be reported stolen out of Dublin California.

"We are grateful that no officers or bystanders were injured during the suspect's bold and careless getaway," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "These are serious crimes committed by a dangerous individual who needed to be found and arrested."

Ledwick was transported back to the Bay Area and booked at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

The Alameda County District Attorney has since reviewed this investigation and charged Ledwick with resisting arrest, fleeing officers in a pursuit and a felony probation violation.

The San Leandro Police Department would like to thank the Truckee Police Department for their assistance in this case.
