Advisory

NWS has issued a Flood Advisory for McDowell County until 1:15 pm. Click link for more info.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
Central McDowell County in western North Carolina...
Mitchell County in western North Carolina...
Northwestern Caldwell County in western North Carolina...
Avery County in western North Carolina...
Northwestern Burke County in western North Carolina...

* Until 115 PM EST.

* At 716 AM EST, Doppler radar indicated a broad area of heavy rain
moving northeast along the northern sections of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. Radar and rain gauges indicated rainfall rates of one-
half to three-quarters of an inch per hour, and this heavy rain is
impacting locations that have received 1 to 3 inches of rain over
the past 24 hours. This will cause minor flooding in the Advisory
area. Additional heavy rainfall will move into the region from the
west along a cold front later this morning, and flood problems may
worsen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Spruce Pine, Newland, Beech Mountain, Old Fort, Banner Elk, Elk
Park, Bakersville, Beech Mountain In Avery County, Crossnore and
Sugar Mountain. Flooding is most likely to develop along Cane
Creek in the Bakersville area and also along the South Toe River
near Celo. Additional flooding will be possible along the Linville
River in Avery County.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles. A Flood Advisory means river or stream
flows are elevated, or ponding of water in urban or other areas is
occurring or is imminent.

The additional heavy rain will also increase the risk of landslides,
especially in areas where slides have occurred in the past. Be
especially alert if you are near a stream, especially at the base of
a mountain or in a cove. Watch for loose-moving soil and rocks or a
sudden increase in streamflow. Leave the area quickly if this is
observed. When driving along roads where the terrain is steep or
rocky, watch and listen for falling rocks, mud, trees and other
debris.

Only when it is safe to do so, please report floodwaters or
landslides flowing over roads or threatening property to the National
Weather Service by calling toll-free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by
posting on our Facebook page, or via Twitter using hashtag NWSGSP.
Your message should describe the event and the specific location
where it occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream
names, and other landmarks.
