Protect Yourself this Holiday Season from Auto Burglars
San Mateo Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit has seen an increase in auto burglaries within our city. Help us make San Mateo an unfriendly place for crooks while we combat this regional issue.
Auto burglaries are happening in busy parking lots and residential areas alike. We are increasing our efforts in the impacted areas and we are asking our community to partner with us by being alert to suspicious activity and to protect yourself from becoming a victim. It only takes thieves a few seconds to break a window and steal property from your car.
Please choose to spend an extra 30 seconds protecting your valuables instead of several hours cleaning up the mess left by a thief. Below are few tips to help protect yourself from being a victim.
Here’s what to do:
Lock your doors
Don’t leave valuables in plain view
Be aware of your surroundings
Report suspicious persons
Reporting suspicious activity:
Dispatchers will ask what the person is wearing, direction of travel, associated vehicle, license plate number, and what the suspicious behavior was.
Here’s what to look for:
Vehicles backed into a parking stall with the driver still in the vehicle
Persons walking up and down aisles
Persons looking into vehicles and/or checking door handles
Vehicles roaming the parking lot with no apparent purpose
We can deter crime by following the simple steps below. For more information on Crime Prevention and Safety Tips, visit the City of San Mateo Police page http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/1630/Crime-Prevention-Safety-Tips
