News Release - Palm Springs Police Department

At 1204 hours, PSPD dispatch received a 911 call regarding an assault that occurred in the 400 block of West Dominguez Road.  Patrol officers arrived and learned that the suspect used a blunt weapon to strike the victim in the head.  The victim suffered a moderate head injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  The suspect barricaded himself inside his residence in the 400 block of W. Dominguez Road.  Officers surrounded the suspect's residence and called the suspect out, but he refused to exit the residence.  Officers received information that the suspect possibly armed himself with explosives.  The Desert Regional SWAT Team responded as well as the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Hazardous Device Team.  Crisis Negotiators were able to make telephone contact with the suspect and he agreed to surrender.  The suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody by SWAT.  The Hazardous Device Team swept the residence and determined it to be safe.  The suspect, James Hardwick, 35 years old from Palm Springs, was arrested for 245 PC - Assault with a Deadly Weapon and 422 PC - Criminal Threats and later transported to the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
