UPDATE: Union City Blvd. Partially Re-Opened

*****Union City Blvd. Partially Re-Opened*****

On Thursday December 13, 2018 a water main burst underneath the northbound lanes of Union City Blvd.  The water caused damage to the roadway which made it unsafe for travel.  This caused the closure of northbound Union City Blvd. between Smith Street and Whipple Rd.

The Alameda County Water District has been on-scene since Thursday effecting repairs to the line, restoring service to customers, and attempting to repair the roadway.

As of 12:00 this afternoon, northbound Union City Blvd. has been partially re-opened.

·         Traffic will be reduced to one lane on northbound Union City Blvd. beginning at Smith Street and ending just south of Whipple Rd.

·         Southbound lanes of Union City Blvd. are also reduced to a single lane but only between Whipple Road and just north of the UPRR tracks.

The lane closures have been set in order to allow for the safety of the workers who are continuing to effect repairs and for equipment needed to complete the project.

Message boards have been placed at key locations on Union City Blvd and Smith Street notifying motorists of the lane closures.

Although the roadway has been partially opened for through traffic, we strongly recommend that motorists traversing this area attempt to seek alternate routes.  Motorists travelling on Union City Blvd. (both north and south) should expect delays.

At this time, there is no estimate for all construction to be completed.

This is a major project which has challenged personnel and resources.  We would like to thank the community for their patience during this roadway emergency.

Media questions can be forwarded to the department’s P.I.O., Lt. Steve Mendez at 510-675-5243 or via email to [email protected].
