Incident Summary

Petaluma PD officers were dispatched to the Sheraton Hotel to assist staff in removing a guest who was seen looking under guest room doors.  Officers spoke with two guests, one of whom was a victim of the subject’s activities, and learned Javier Martinez was seen on his hands and knees looking under guest’s doors the previous evening.  The victim told officers he briefly spoke with Martinez in the hotel lounge the previous evening, but otherwise did not know him.  Officers also learned Martinez had changed his original room to that guest’s adjoining room and had been staying at the hotel for over one week.

Officers contacted Martinez at his room, and he admitted to looking under doors to determine which ones were corner rooms, so he could change his room to one of them.  Officers searched his room and found electronic recording devices, external electronic data storage devices, fiber-optic cameras, and tools that could be used to install the cameras.  One of the cameras was found under the victim’s adjoining door and actively recording.  Martinez claimed his activities were innocent in nature and inspired by television reality shows.

Martinez was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County for unlawful peeping.  Information gathered suggested he is a frequent guest within the Sheraton chain.  The investigation is ongoing due to the amount of seized electronic data and potential for more victims.  If you have information related to Martinez’ suspected activities, please call the Petaluma PD at (707) 778-4372.
