Hilton Head Island High School student/juvenile detained for carrying a weapon (pistol) on school property
Shortly after Hilton Head Island High School let out for the day, a male student was observed outside—on school property—with a pistol tucked in his waistband. Witnesses notified school administrators, who then advised the Sheriff's Office school resource officer (SRO) of the incident and the student's identity. The SRO notified other area Sheriff's Office deputies and an investigation into the incident ensued.
Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the student's residence and met with his parents. It was learned that the student—who is a juvenile—was not at home, but the parents granted consent for the deputies to search the residence for firearms. When the deputies searched the residence, a pistol—similar to the one witnesses reported seeing in the student's waistband—was recovered.
A short time after Sheriff's Office deputies recovered the pistol, the student returned to his residence. Deputies detained the student for the charges of Carrying a Weapon on School Property and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun (pistol). The student is being transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, where he will be held pending his appearance before the Family Court.
