Newlywed Husband Suspected of Battering Wife

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of battering his new wife early Monday morning after they got into an argument on the way home from the hospital.

Angel Tovar, 35, of the 200 block of Turquoise Loop, is charged with a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and a misdemeanor count of battery.

Las Cruces police investigators learned that Tovar and his wife have been married since October 2018. On Sunday evening, they allegedly got into a verbal argument and Tovar had to be hospitalized. About 2 a.m., after being discharged from the hospital and while the two continued arguing, Tovar allegedly punched his wife while she drove him home.

Investigators learned they went home where the argument and physical assault continued. Tovar is suspected of forcing his wife into the master bedroom where he straddled her, strangled her with his left hand and repeatedly punched her with his right hand.

The woman was finally able to stop the assault when she punched him. She went to Memorial Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries.

Tovar was arrested on a warrant Monday evening and is initially being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
