Moderate to heavy precipitation will fall as a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the region, especially tonight through Sunday, and gradually taper off Sunday night through Monday. Total snow accumulations of 9 to 15 inches expected, with up to 20 inches on the higher ridges between Mount Mitchell and Beech Mountain. * WHERE...The northern mountains of North Carolina, and a portion of the foothills and Piedmont between the Blue Ridge Escarpment and Interstate 77. * WHEN...From 7 PM this evening to noon Monday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Tree damage and widespread, prolonged power outages are possible due to the heavy snow and icing. Travel will be very difficult or impossible. Road conditions will deteriorate this evening into early Sunday morning, with highway travel continuing to be impacted through early next week.
