With everyone enjoying the holiday shopping season, the Simi Valley Police Department would like to offer the following suggestions to help you from becoming a victim during the holidays. Don’t become a victim, Stay Alert and Stay Safe!
• While dining out use a purse hanger clipped to the inside of the table or store your purse on your lap. Do not leave your purse/backpack slung over the back of a chair or on a stroller, thieves can easily steal it.
• Carry only the cash and credit/debit cards that you will need. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you only lose that amount of cash and only need to make a few telephone calls to cancel your cards.
• If carrying a wallet, put it in your front pocket and/or carry your purse in the front with your strap across your body.
• Do not leave your purse in a shopping cart unattended, and zip it closed so no one can reach inside and steal your wallet.
• Whenever you pick up valuable purchases, lock those items in your trunk or hide them under a blanket on the rear floor. If you have more shopping to do, relocate your vehicle in the parking lot. Thieves may be watching, and can break into your vehicle once you leave.
• Always roll up all windows, lock your vehicle, and park in a well-lit area. Never leave the keys/fob in your vehicle.
• Plan ahead. Have your keys/fob in hand when approaching your vehicle. Your keys can be used as a defensive weapon. On the key fob push the alarm button, this will alert others in the area.
• Do not be distracted by using your cell phone. Your cell phone itself is a tempting target.
