Be Who You Needed When You Were Younger. Five Reasons to be a tutor at the Fairfield PAL Center!

Be Who You Needed When You Were Younger.
Five Reasons to be a tutor at the Fairfield PAL Center!

Help us make a difference afterschool!  Join us on Dec 7 at 6pm and learn how to be a volunteer as a tutor at the Fairfield PAL Center.  Volunteers are needed to help anytime Monday through Thursday between 3:00p.m. and 5:30p.m. to help with high school math, English, science, Spanish, and to assist with teaching study and test taking skills.  Training and curriculum is provided.  High School student are welcome to apply! Consider the top five reasons to volunteer at the PAL Center afterschool:

1. Tutoring works. One-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study skills workshops, and other ways of learning make a measurable difference for students. When you show up to help a student—you show them they are worth investing in.

2. You get more than you give. Volunteer tutoring is rewarding. You have the chance to make a real difference in the life of a teen, in Fairfield, and the greater community. Volunteer tutoring is easy and fun, and you get to experience positive response and growth. MOREOVER, IT LOOKS GREAT TO FUTURE SCHOOLS AND EMPLOYERS. As a volunteer tutor at the PAL Center, you will gain valuable references, improve your skills, and create an outstanding work history portfolio that will get you noticed.

3. You’re the expert. Volunteers get to share what they know, not only about the subject matter, but how success in school has made a difference in their lives. And, when you do not know the answer, you have a chance to teach a student how to learn new information, together.

4. It’s flexible, and predictable. Once you complete the short orientation and background paperwork to be a PAL volunteer, you can tutor as your schedule allows. You can come for one hour a week, one day a week, twice a month, or simply when you have free time. You can drop in and offer direct tutoring or you can lead engaging workshops and curriculum that fall in your own wheelhouse!

5. All eyes are on you. Everyone loves attention, and tutoring allows you to provide it. The attention can bolster the student’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence. And, students who form good relationships with tutors may feel more positively about relationships with others.

There is a short applicant process (including fingerprinting) required to volunteer at the center for anyone 18 years of age and older.  All costs are paid for by the PAL program and the process generally takes about 15- 20 minutes per applicant.  All volunteers must agree to become mandated reporters and pass a local background check administered by the Fairfield Police Department.

The Fairfield PAL Program is open to Fairfield, Suisun, and Travis Students enrolled in grades seven through twelve. Memberships are $10 per year and can be purchased at the Fairfield Community Center (1000 Webster Street) Mon-Thursday between 11:30-5:30pm. The PAL Center is located at 2195 Union Ave in Fairfield.

The Fairfield PAL program offers Fairfield, Suisun, and Travis teens a place to grow, learn, and build the skills they need today and in the future. The PAL Center offers teens a safe environment, supports working families and helps students achieve by giving them opportunities right now. The center is open Monday – Thursdays between 3pm and 9pm and Fridays from 3pm until 10:30pm.
