Earthquake Update: New public safety information; Please review

Update:
Good morning everyone!
 
Yesterday was a challenging and emotional day for so many of us. Watching the community come together in response to this emergency event was truly remarkable, and we’re grateful for your continued cooperation during this stressful time. Your safety is our number #1 priority. We’re here for you if you need us. If you have any questions, please call 211.
 
Below is an update and review as your start your day:
 
Communications:
Anchorage remains under an emergency declaration and continues to keep the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activated. All public safety agencies are operating at emergency staffing levels.
 
APD Dispatch remains fully operational. Only call 911 for emergencies.
 
Cell phone companies are advising to use text message or social media instead of calling for non-emergencies due to the extremely high volume of calls on their networks.
 
The Mayor and his public safety team will be giving an update at 10:30 a.m. about what’s happened overnight and what you need to know right now.

Transportation:
Glenn Highway:
                -Between Peter’s Creek and Eklutna; major damage and more possible with aftershocks; follow detours
                -Outbound @ Hiland Road; Closed; follow detours
                -Briggs Bridge @ Hiland Loop Road; Southbound closed; follow detours
 
Seward Highway:
                -Between Tudor Road and 36th Avenue; Left lanes; Both directions; Closed
                -Mile Post 104-113 near Indian; Multiple rock slides continue; Avoid area if possible
 
Major road closures and delays will continue for the next several days. Stay off the roads unless necessary. Obey traffic laws, follow officers’ commands and move for emergency responders.
 
People Mover: All rides free today and tomorrow; Regular weekend schedule
 
The Ted Stevens International Airport is fully operational. Check with your airlines.
Merrill Field Airport: Tower is not operating; open for non-tower operations
 
Shelters:
Egan Center (555 West 5th Avenue): Main Exhibition Hall.
Girdwood Fire Department (186 Egloff Drive)
Chugiak Senior Center (22424 Birchwood Loop Rd)
 
Hospitals:
All major medical facilities are open. Emergency Rooms are accepting patients.
 
Utilities:
Many homes and buildings are damaged including water and gas lines.
 
Anchorage Water and Waste Water Utility (AWWU) continues its issued boiled water advisory out of precaution; however, there are no known water contamination issues. No plans to shut down the entire water system. Repairs continue.
 
ENSTAR has activated its emergency plan. Call 907-334-7763 or 907-334-7770 to report any gas leaks.
 
Solid Waste Services: Landfill open only (normal hours); No commercial collection. Central Transfer Station closed.

Keep extinguishers on hand
Check gas lines
Shelter in place
Check on friends and family

Stay off the roads
Obey traffic laws, follow officers’ commands and move for emergency responders

Egan Center Update (555 West 5th Avenue): Overnight sheltering available in the main Exhibition Hall courtesy of the American Red Cross.
 
Utilities:
Anchorage Water and Waste Water Utility (AWWU) has issued a boiled water advisory out of precaution; however, there are no known water contamination issues. No plans to shut down the entire water system. There will be isolated outages as repairs are made to broken water mains.

Anchorage School District is allowing parents to pick up their children from school when they feel it is safe to do so. All ASD rental facilities have been closed until further notice. All ASD and non-ASD afterschool activities are cancelled. All facilities in Anchorage School District will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, December 3-4, 2018.

The Glenn Highway and the Seward Highway are open.
Major delays and closures continue. There are major detours in certain areas due to damage such as the South Eagle River Bridge, Mirror Lake exit, Minnesota Blvd. and Indian.

Attention Anchorage Residents:
The Anchorage Police Department is operational after this morning’s massive earthquake.
 
Our Dispatch center is fully staffed and answering your calls as quickly as they can. Please only call 911 if it’s an emergency.
 
Our officers have been dispatched throughout the area and are handling multiple situations. We are working with our public safety partners to keep you safe. For parents, we are working with our partners at the Anchorage School District to check on your children and make sure they are safe.
 
There is major infrastructure damage across Anchorage. Many homes and buildings are damaged. Many roads and bridges are closed. Stay off the roads if you don’t need to drive. Seek a safe shelter. Check on your surroundings and loved ones.
 
We will keep you updated via Nixle throughout the day.
 
Again, stay safe and off the roads. Call 911 only if it’s an emergency.
