Advisory

MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED IN DUARTE TONIGHT & THURSDAY; CITY TO REMAIN AT GREEN ALERT LEVEL

Dear Duarte Community;

Re: Updated Rainstorm information

Based on the latest computer model data generated by the National Weather Service, the City will remain at the Green Alert level during tonight and Thursday's storm.  The heaviest rainfall will occur along and near the cold front expected to slide through San Luis Obispo County this evening and into Los Angeles County by early Thursday morning. This is a 1-2 year type storm, a typical event that we receive each winter capable of rain-related impacts.  The cells will be fast-moving and may only bring 10-20 minutes of intensity to one location. The potential for any thunderstorm activity remains extremely low.

Here are a few main points for the rainfall with this system:

  • Heaviest rain rates are expected be near 0.50" per hour. Isolated rates could reach 0.75" per hour on higher mountain slopes, mainly tonight and early Thursday morning.

  • Rates at these intensities would create many shallow mud and debris flows with localized damage for the most recent burn scars - including the Woolsey, Hill, South, and Stone Fires.

Peak rainfall timing -

  • Los Angeles Co: 4am - 10am Thursday
Sandbag Information -

Residents are encouraged to assess their property for potential areas for mud and debris flow and determine proper sand bag needs. For additional concerns related to sandbags, residents are advised to contact the City of Duarte Community Development Department. Please call (626) 357-7931 ext. 262. Duarte City Hall is open Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

Unfilled sandbags and sand are also available at the Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 44, located at 1105 Highland Avenue in the rear area 24/7. Residents are advised to be prepared with the proper equipment to fill and transport filled sandbags to their respective private property.
