Re-emerging Scam: Callers impersonating law enforcement officers and asking for payment to avoid incarceration

Over the past week numerous Beaufort County residents—particularly residents listed on the sex offender registry—reported they had received telephone calls from suspicious persons impersonating a law enforcement officers. The callers have been identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Office deputies and told their intended victims that they had to pay a fine in order to avoid arrest and incarceration. Specifically, the callers have been asking for GreenDot cards, Google Play cards, and GameStop cards as forms of payment.

These telephone calls are scams, no member of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office will ever ask for payment of a fine over the telephone or otherwise to avoid arrest and incarceration. If you receive a telephone call similar to this, do not entertain or comply with the callers instructions for payment. Contact the Sheriff's Office at 843-524-2777 or your law enforcement agency of jurisdiction to report telephone scams and other suspicious activities. Please spread the word of this re-emerging telephone scam to your family and friends.

We appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
