***Tip of the Week: Reporting Suspicious Activity PROPERLY ***

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station takes all concerns voiced by its citizens seriously, and we encourage people to call us whenever they see something that they think may be suspicious. In many cases however, some citizens have chosen to use social media as a way to post suspicious activities, rather than calling the Sheriff’s Department. This can create a couple of problems. First of all, Santa Clarita Sheriff’s personnel do not monitor social media as a way of receiving complaints. As a result of this, when citizens do call the station to report that they have spotted a ‘wanted person’ that was posted on social media, the station will not know what person they are referring too. People also need to be aware that when they post photos of someone and accuse them of committing a crime, they could be subject to a lawsuit if that person did not commit any crime and feels they are a victim of slander. Citizens should absolutely NOT make or post any comments of violent actions they will take toward a ‘suspicious person’, as these could be taken as a terrorist threat.

If you see something or someone that you feel is suspicious, we encourage you to call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station immediately at 661-255-1121, or 911 if you feel it is a life threatening emergency or a serious crime in progress. Try to give the dispatcher a good description of any person(s) or vehicle(s) involved, as well as an accurate location where the incident is occurring. If you would like to know the results of your call, inform the dispatcher that you would like a return call after the deputies have concluded their investigation.

Take care, and be safe.
