Scam using The Whitefish Bay Police Department's phone number

The Whitefish Bay Police Department has taken reports of a telephone scam where the scammers are “spoofing” the Whitefish Bay Police Department's actual telephone number to make the call appear legitimate. Caller ID spoofing is when a caller deliberately transmit false information to your caller ID to disguise their identity. The scammer generally says that there is a warrant out for your arrest and then attempts to illicit personal information from you such as social security or bank account information to “pay off” the warrant. The scammer may also ask you to obtain certain types of gift cards to pay them. The Whitefish Bay Police Department will NEVER contact you by telephone to address an arrest warrant and no government agency will ever ask you to pay them in gift cards. We recommend that you never give out personal information over the phone, especially if you did not initiate the phone call. If you receive a call from our department and are concerned about the legitimacy of the call, please contact our department by telephone or in person. Other area law enforcement agencies are also experiencing this scam.
