20 year-old suspect Ayah Abdallah sentenced to 11 years prison for the murder of 19 year-old victim Yusuf Nawabii

On November 6, 2018, Ayah Abdallah (20 year old female, Fremont resident) was sentenced to eleven years State Prison behind her involvement in the murder of victim Yusuf Nawabi (19 year old male, Fremont resident). Abdallah pled ‘no contest’ to PC 192(a) - Voluntary Manslaughter. Below is a summary of the investigation:

On Sunday, December 17, 2017, at 10:03 p.m., Fremont dispatchers received a 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon (stabbing) incident in the 41000 block of Fremont Boulevard. Fremont patrol officers and fire paramedics immediately responded. Officers arrived within two minutes and immediately began providing trauma care to a male victim suffering from a stab wound. Fremont Fire paramedics took over medical care and officers established a crime scene, began collecting witness statements and evidence at the scene.

The victim, Yusuf Nawabi, was transported to a trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Multiple witnesses to the incident told officers they believed the incident initially began as a domestic violence dispute between a male and female. The argument escalated when Abdallah stabbed Nawabi in the abdomen area. Following the stabbing, Abdallah immediately fled the scene in a silver Mercedes E-Class. Prior to Abdallah leaving the scene, witnesses obtained a partial license plate to the vehicle she was driving and provided officers with a detailed physical description.

Officers and detectives from the Fremont Police Department Investigations Unit coordinated efforts to locate the suspect vehicle. At approx. 11:45p.m., officers located the vehicle in the 38000 block of Logan Drive and began surveillance on it. At approximately 11:45 p.m., officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop as the suspect vehicle drove away from the residence. Ayah Abdallah was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The weapon believed to be used in the murder (a black knife with a 4 ¼” blade) was recovered on her person. The knife was later submitted for forensic DNA testing and found to have the victim’s blood on its blade (confirmed thru DNA match).

A search warrant was served at Abdallah’s residence and various items of evidence were seized. Additional witness interviews and physical evidence tied Abdallah to the murder. Abdallah was booked into Fremont Jail in the early morning hours for murder.

On December 19, 2017, the case was submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney for review and charging. Ayah Abdallah was charged with one count of PC 187 - Murder and an arming clause (being armed with a deadly weapon).

On June 6 and 7, 2018 a preliminary hearing was held. At the conclusion of the hearing, Abdallah was found ‘held to answer’ for murder of victim Nawabi and the arming clause. Abdallah had remained in continuous custody in an Alameda County jail facility since the date of her initial arrest and was released to the California Department of Corrections on November 9, 2018 to begin her prison sentence.
