2017 DPS Crime in Texas report released***With Chart***

The Texas Department of Public Safety released their 2017 Crime in Texas report today.   The report lists crime data compiled from 1,079 law enforcement agencies in Texas that report crime statistics to the Department of Public Safety’s Uniform Crime Reporting Bureau.  The report includes the final total number of Uniform Crime Report Index Crimes and the crime rates for each jurisdiction.  Index Crimes are considered the major criminal offenses by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Texas Department of Public Safety for data collection purposes.    These offenses are Murder, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny, and Auto Theft.   For 2017, The Amarillo Police Department reported 10,241 Index Crimes compared to 10,883 in 2016, a decrease of -5.9%.  The Crime in Texas report indicates that Amarillo’s crime rate in 2017 decreased by 6.2% compa red to 2016, based on a 2017 population of 200,993 residents.  The Crime in Texas report also includes criminal offense clearance rate data, arrest data, and detailed analysis for specific categories criminal offenses.
