Too often, the Green Bay Police Department receives reports from elderly people who have fallen victim of a scam. It is disheartening to hear when it is reported that they have lost thousands of dollars to a scam or fraud .

The nature of the scams often change but the targets do not. Most recently, an elderly person in our community was convinced that his/her computer had a virus from a message that popped up on the computer screen. The scammers asked for the victims PayPal account and then later asked for $6000 in google play cards. Sadly, the victim went to the store and purchased the cards and fell victim to this scam.

With the upcoming holiday season we want everyone to follow the below crime prevention tips:

• Retailers-Train your staff to be on the look out for people that purchase large quantities of gift cards. If these purchases are being made, additional questions should be asked, especially if they are elderly.
• Families-have these conversations with your family members to help stop future victims.
• Community-Be on the look out for one another. If you see something like this happening, please ask the person questions. You may be stopping a crime that you do not know of.

We hope this message reaches everyone. We want these crimes to stop. Investigators have a difficult time following the suspects, as this is often done online and it is very difficult to track.
