INDIANAPOLIS – The following information is preliminary and may change as the investigation progresses.
On November 9, 2018, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were provided information about a possible armed robbery in progress at the AutoZone located at 5455 N Keystone. Just before 9:25 p.m., officers set up a perimeter around the business. A short time later three suspects came out of the business wearing clothing that concealed their faces. When confronted by officers two of the suspects turned toward the officers and the officers could see they were armed with handguns. At this time it is believed one officer fired a total of two shots at the suspects. One of the suspects got into a car and fled the scene but crashed at 55th and Oxford after a short vehicle pursuit and was taken into custody. The two other suspects fled on foot and one of them has also been taken into custody. Officers quickly set up a perimeter while K9’s and a Drone searched for the third suspect who has not been apprehended at this time.
Robbery detectives were on scene to investigate the armed robbery that did occur, Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services also responded and have assisted in recovering two handguns believed to be used to commit the robbery. An unknown amount of money believed to have been taken during the robbery has also been recovered. At this time, no physical evidence has been recovered to support whether or not any of the three suspects were struck by the officer when he was forced to fire his duty weapon. No Officers have been reported injured during this incident at this time.
As is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a parallel investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy. The involved officer will be placed on Administrative Leave as the investigation is conducted, and will have access to IMPD’s wellness program for coping assistance during this time.
