Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting.  The incident occurred on Thursday November 8, 2018, at approximately 1:00 p.m., on the 13500 block of Mariposa Avenue, Gardena.

Detectives have learned that Gardena Police Officers received a call of a traffic collision/possible carjacking at 161^st Street/Vermont Avenue in the city of Gardena.  Upon their arrival they contacted the victims whose vehicle was possibly stolen/carjacked.   Officers received information from a citizen that the suspect was possibly armed with a handgun.  Responding officers were checking the area and located the vehicle at 147^th Street and Budlong.

Gardena Officers went in pursuit of the stolen/carjacked vehicle and continued westbound 135^th street.  The pursuit continued to southbound Mariposa Avenue and came to a stop just south of 135^th street.  The suspect exited the vehicle and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Officers took the suspect into custody at the scene without incident.  Paramedics responded to the scene to treat the suspect who sustained one gunshot wound to his upper torso.  The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is in stable condition.  His injuries do not appear to be life threatening. 

No firearm was recovered at the scene, however the stolen vehicle has not been searched at this time. 

The investigation is still ongoing.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital.
