Advisory

A citizen walking by the aqueduct hears a cry for help and rescues a fisherman who had fallen in the water

DATE/TIME: November 7, 2018, 11:58 am

INCIDENT: Fisherman slips into the aqueduct and is rescued

LOCATION: California Aqueduct - Main Street, near Escondido Avenue

VICTIM: John Taliaferro, age 55 a resident of Hesperia

SUMMARY: On November 7, 2018, at approximately 11:58 am, a citizen of Hesperia was walking on Main Street, over the California Aqueduct when he heard cries for help and splashing sounds. The citizen looked down into the Aqueduct and saw the victim, John Taliaferro, who had fallen into the water and was unable to get out. The citizen ran to help Taliaferro, then grabbed an item of clothing to reach Taliaferro. The citizen was able to get Taliaferro to the side and hold him there, while he called 9-1-1. Deputies and a Sergeant from the Hesperia Station were close to the scene and all arrived within minutes. Deputies threw Taliaferro a rescue throwrope and then worked together to safely remove Taliaferro from the water. Once Taliaferro was safe on land, deputies provided first aid for shock and exposure to the cold water. San Bernardino County Fire Paramedics responded to the scene and treated Taliaferro. It was later determined Taliaferro was fishing on the bank of the Aqueduct and had slid into the water.

Although this incident ended well, citizens are cautioned about their interaction at or near the Aqueduct as the water is often moving faster than it appears and can be dangerous if someone should enter the water. With winter approaching and water temperatures dropping, exposure to cold water can happen quick and could be life threatening.
