Disturbance/Fire contained in the Sonoma County Jail

A Sonoma County Inmate intent on causing a disturbance at the jail has been detained after causing a fire in a module. At about 10:00 this morning an inmate determined to cause a disturbance was in a common area of the Male Special Module at the Sonoma County Jail, a special housing unit designed for inmates that are segregated from the general population for various reasons.

The inmate spread soap on the floor and then was able to start two small fires in a common area of the unit which created smoke and the fire alarms to activate. The jail's sprinkler system put out the fire and the jail's special response team responded and took the inmate into custody quickly.

Inmates in the housing unit were evacuated to other units and all are considered safe. Up to five inmates are being transported/treated at local hospitals for smoke inhilation. The Santa Rosa Fire Department responded to the scene to assist with the fire cleanup, investigation. The incident is in a fluent stage and is under investigation. There are no significant injuries reported at this time.

This information is preliminary and will be updated as more is learned.
